FORE!

Dear Bruce Power Managers and Employees,

We are not here to ruin your golf tournament, rather we are just here to let you know some facts about our employer, Candu Energy/SNC Lavalin, who is hosting the tournament, and ourselves, the Society of Professional Engineers and Associates (SPEA) who are on strike against Candu Energy.

We have been on strike now for 10 weeks. Our members worked on the recent Bruce refurbishments and we do outage work at the Bruce as well. The annulus gas system job currently being done, for example, would normally be done by our members. Instead this job is being done by scabs, some of whom have little or no experience.

As employees of Bruce Power you enjoy fair compensation and a very good defined benefit (DB) pension plan. As employees of the crown corporation AECL, we also enjoyed a DB pension plan but will lose it in two years' time. SNC Lavalin told us that they could not compete in the nuclear sector if saddled with a DB pension plan. We have agreed to give ours up and trust that you can appreciate what a huge concession this is. But we are still on strike because that is not enough for this employer.

What Ever Became of our Pension Concession?

There was a time, during our long protracted negotiations with SNC Lavalin and then Candu Energy, going back to May of 2011, when we believed that if we could solve the pension issue everything else would fall into place and we would have a new collective agreement in short order. After all, a number of Air Canada unions and Canada Post went on strike to save their DB pension plans. Some investors and stock analysts that we have spoken to in recent days have said to us, "You gave up your DB pension plan didn't you? Why are you still on strike?"

Indeed, we have puzzled over this ourselves. SNC Lavalin told us last August that a DB pension plan would cost them 30% of payroll, on their balance sheet. When we agreed to an interim defined contribution (DC) pension plan we expected the dominos to fall. But we agreed to an interim DC plan about two months ago and we are still on strike.

Striking Candu Energy Engineers and Scientists to Picket Bay Street

Workers Raise Alarm Bells About SNC-Lavalin's Declining Earnings and Corporate Culture

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Aug. 9, 2012) - The Society of Professional Engineers and Associates (SPEA) is holding an information picket this morning in front of the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX) to draw attention to SNC-Lavalin's disregard for employees and shareholders.

Financial experts agree that SNC-Lavalin is facing a "perfect storm": Financial scandal, labour disputes and the search for a CEO, all attributable to a corporate culture that needs fixing from top to bottom, said White. "We agree and they can start by settling our labour dispute so we can return to work to deliver the best nuclear technology and return value for shareholders."
