Some 150 striking engineers from Mississauga-based Candu Energy set up information picket lines at the Burnhamthorpe Rd. W. office of Mississauga-Erindale MP Bob Dechert today to urge the federal government to take action to settle the dispute. Candu, a nuclear technology company which supplies about half of Ontario’s energy and 16 per cent of the country’s overall, was sold to SNC-Lavalin Inc. last year.

Inside Halton - Striking workers picket Halton MP’s office

Approximately 40 members of the Society of Professional Engineers and Associates (SPEA) picketed in front of Halton MP Lisa Raitt’s Main Street constituency office this afternoon demanding she step in to end their labour dispute with parent company, SNC-Lavalin.

SPEA, representing 850 engineers, scientists and technologists employed by CANDU Energy Inc., have been on strike for seven weeks. CANDU is owned by Montreal-based SNC-Lavalin, and its employees design, build and service nuclear reactors that supply 50 per cent of Ontario’s energy.

The remaining point of contention is seniority, which union members want sent to arbitration, said spokesperson Jim Czegeny, a mechanical engineer.

“We will accept everything except we want this last issue to be dealt with by the arbitrator,” said Czegeny.

“We want (Labour Minister) Lisa Raitt to call Kevin Wallace (president and general manager of CANDU) and say, ‘You need to get the arbitrator in here.’ The union is very happy and willing to have the arbitrator resolve this.”
